Super Weekend for Lady Waterdogs at 'State'!
February 28, 2009 By Daniel Otten of Celina High School
Friday and Saturday were outstanding days for the Celina Lady Waterdogs as five Lady Dogs participated in the Division II State Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. Friday was 'prelim' day with the top 16 times in each event advancing to Saturday's finals. On Friday CHS was good enough to advance in all five events entered, unfortunately for the 200-yard medley relay (LaRae Dorsten, Courtney McKirnan, Ashley Coon, and Paige Mertz), their school record prelim performance was disallowed, as the Lady Dogs were disqualified. Senior Kirsten Samples was Celina's only individual swimmer. She advanced in both the 50 free (24.96) and 100 free (54.27). On Saturday she duplicated her 50 free prelim time of 24.96 in the finals to place in a tie for 12th. In the 100 free final Kirsten placed 13th with a clocking of 54.71. The weekend's highlight was undoubtedly the performances of the freestyle relays. On Friday the quartet of Courtney, Ashley, Paige, and Kirsten made it to the finals with times of 1:40.35 (200 free relay) and 3:43.41 (400 free relay). In Saturday's 'final' swims the Ladies placed 3rd in the State in the 200 free relay with a school record time of 1:39.73 (.20 seconds faster than last week's District record swim). The third place finish was Celina's best ever at 'State'. Courtney and Kirsten closed out stellar H S careers as the freestyle foursome clocked another school record 3:42.26 (old record set at District was 3:42.93) as it placed 10th in the 'State'. The Ladies' efforts were good enough to score 54 'team' points which put the Dogs 13th in the final 'State' standings, another CHS benchmark.
