Andrew and Ashley Qualify to State!!!

November 4, 2009
By Daniel Otten of Celina High School

Saturday was one to remember for two Celina CC athletes.  On a cool, blustery, somewhat sloppy afternoon seniors Andrew Goodwin and Ashley Figel earned the right to participate in the November 7, Ohio High School Athletic Association's State Cross-Country Championship Meet.  Participating in the Division II Tiffin Regional, the two had to place among the top 16 finishers of their respective races in order to advance to the 'State' competition.  Both Ashley and Andrew took care of business, leaving nothing to chance.

Ashley took part in the second race of the day (Girls D-II).  She had the race of her career covering the 5000-meter distance in a personal best time of 19:42.  The time, and outstanding effort, put her 9th in the field of 127 harriers.  In doing so she defeated four girls who beat her a week earlier at the Ottawa District and improved the District time by :28.

Andrew, taking the course a couple of hours after Ashley, continued his stellar season as he ran as part of the lead pack from the mile mark to the end.  His clocking of 15:59 was good for the RUNNER-UP spot of 132 athletes, behind the state's leading D-II runner.  Andrew's 2nd place finish was the hihgest ever for a CHS male at the regional level.  His performance is one of the best in Division II heading to next week's state competition.

Ashley and Andrew will be at Scioto Downs on Saturday, November 7 as participants in the OHSAA State CC Championships.  Ashley runs at 11:50, with Andrew toeing the line at 2:05!

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH ANDREW AND ASHLEY...and continued success on the 7th.
