Regional meet produces three 'School Records' and three 'State' Qualifiers.

May 30, 2009
By Daniel Otten of Celina High School

Wednesday evening the Celina Men and Women Regional qualifiers went their separate ways as the Ladies headed to Amherst and the Guys went to Pickerington.  Friday evening the Bulldog Tracksters were on the road again, back to Amherst (Women) and Pickerington (Men) for running and field event finals.  At the bottom of this article is a round-up of Wednesday's action.

On Friday the Ladies particpated in three events...Cayla Hellwarth  in the pole vault, Hannah Fleck  in the 800, as well as the 4 x 400 relay consisting of Lexi Mills, Kelsey Waterman, Cayla, and Hannah.  Cayla vaulted to a personal best, and NEW SCHOOL RECORD as she cleared 10' 4".  Her effort was good for 6th place, just two spots away from a 'State' meet birth.  Hannah had an outstanding 800 run as she finished third, which earned her a slot in next weekend's 'State Championship' meet.  Her time of 2:13.91 was a personal best by nearly :04 and an amazing :11 faster than she ran two weeks ago.  The clocking was also a NEW SCHOOL RECORD.  Hannah's time lowered the oldest of Celina's Girls records from 2:14.36 set in 1883 by 'State Champion' Cyndy Chapin.  The Ladies 4 x 400 relay finished 8th with a time of 4:06.30.

In Pickerington Andrew Goodwin  and Mitch Williams attempted to join Todd Hertel (PV) as 'State' meet qualifiers.  Both guys ran the 1600, with Andrew also scheduled to be in the 3200.  In the 1600 Andrew ran to a 4th place result, garnering a 'State' birth.  His effort established a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 4:18.93.  The previous mark was set in 1985 by Todd Braun (4:20.7).  Mitch ran his personal best and 3rd fastest in CHS history as he placed 6th with a 4:21.91.  Andrew stepped out of the 3200m run to conserve for next week's 'State' 1600.

WEDNESDAY'S RECAP AND REVIEW
The Ladies had qualifiying runs in the 300LH and 4 x 400 relay, as well as the high jump final.  The 4 x 400 relay of Lexi Mills, Kelsey Waterman, Cayla Hellwarth, and Hannah Fleck ran a season best 4:01.77 in qualifying 6th to Friday finals.  The top 4 relays from the finals earn a trip to next weekend's 'State' Championship Meet.  Lexi ran 47.19 in her 300LH prelim, but failed to advance.  Lizz Carr failed to make opening height in the high jump.  Lexi Mills did not run in her 100IH prelim.

In Pickerington Todd Hertel  tied his school record of 14' 3" in the pole vault to finish 4th, thus becoming Celina's 2nd ever pole vault 'State' qualifier.  Tom Burden cleared 13' 0" to finish 12th.  In the discus Aaron Snyder finished 10th with a toss of 136' 9".  Caleb Fickert ran 52.29 in his 400m dash prelim, but was not quick enough to advance to Friday's final.
